23-Year-Old Man Kills Nun in Drunk-Driving Crash, Injures Two Others

A 23-year-old Virginia man has been charged with killing a nun and critically injuring two others in a drunk-driving accident in a suburb of Washington, D.C. Carlos Martinelly Montano, an illegal immigrant, had been arrested twice before on drunk-driving charges.

While driving on a revoked license, Montano crossed a median around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and struck a car carrying three nuns. Sixty-six year-old Sister Denise Mosier was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and Sisters Charlotte Lange and Connie Ruth Lupton were hospitalized and placed on respirators.

Originally from Bolivia, Montano was released by federal immigration authorities after a drunk-driving arrest in 2008. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has demanded a review of the 2008 case. Meanwhile, the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia stated that they were dismayed that the accident has been politicized and should be re-focused on the consequences of drinking and driving.

Montano now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and a third drunk-driving arrest in a period of five years. He is still being treated at a hospital, as are the two surviving nuns.
